What To Look For When Buying A New TV For Your Home Theater

One of the centerpieces of your home theater will be your television, which is why you want to make sure you are making the right purchase decision on this expensive piece of hardware. Here are some tips for purchasing a nice television set that will make you happy.

Avoid Getting An 8K Display

There are many TVs out there that claim to have a better resolution than 4K. When you see that 8K display in the showroom, you'll instantly think that you need to have it. However, an 8K display is something you should stay away from for now. 8K technology is relatively new, and there is barely any 8K content available to support it. Even if you think you are future-proofing your television set purchase, know that the cost of 8K televisions is going to go down many years from now. You won't be saving money by the time you can practically watch 8K content regularly since you spent so much money upfront to be an early adopter. Stay away from 8K and stick with 4K resolutions for now.

Focus On High-Quality HDR

While it's important to have a video at the best possible resolution, many people do not realize the importance of a television that can handle HDR properly. The jump up from 1080p to 4K looks good, but adding HDR content can make a TV look outstanding. Unfortunately, all televisions are not created equal when it comes to this technology.

The problem is that many TVs support an HDR signal, but cannot display it properly. That's because the TV simply cannot get bright enough to show you those vivid colors. Don't just check to see if the TV supports HDR, but check reviews to see how bright the TV gets. When in doubt, try to check the TV out at a showroom and see it in person.

Consider An OLED For Great Picture Quality

If you want to spend the money to upgrade your television, consider spending the money on an OLED television. This type of TV has an individual light source for each pixel, allowing the screen to be completely black for the dark parts of the image. No more light bleeding over letterboxing, or scenes in outer space with halos around the stars. It is the only type of television that can provide an infinite contrast ratio due to the unique way the panel is constructed.
